We visited the coachouse in Clapham when dropping of a gas mask of all things. 

It is a private residence in Clapham, SW London that is hidden beyond a smaller arched entrance corridor. 

​Behind the doors is an oasis. You immediately are hit by an almost Narnia like effect as you are transported from a street in London to a garden full of a variety of plants. The garden is dominated by a huge glass cube which allows for a tranquil area to use whatever the weather. 

The cube is raised over a pond housing fish and acts as a chill out room to play vinyls, read or watch tv. 

Inside the owner has used a great mix of mediums and quirky decorative pieces that are considered and carefully placed but easily fit into the actual living of a home (even with children). 

The standout piece for us is the zebra head that sits neatly into an alcove in the wall. It inspires the room without dominating it

The mix of natural decorative items, from the vintage butterfly case mounted on the wall to the skins on the floor make the home feel real and not artifical. 

The use of vintage items refashioned not just as decorative pieces are integral to actually making use of antiques. Instead of a fruit bowl, use scales for example (see above). Instead of plant pots use apothecary jars (see earlier blog post). 

This ensures that your home remains completely unique yet actually functional unlike many homes in the magazines that we all pore over. 

Let functionality combine with design and quirkiness, the limits are only your ideas and your imagination, everything can be re-purposed, adapted, re-worked or re-fashioned.
